  • Champion Home Builders, Inc. (Champion) has determined that the material installed as underlayment beneath the shingles at the lower eave areas of the roof may not meet performance requirements and may not comply with an applicable Federal Manufactured Home Construction or Safety Standard. A defect may exist. A notice was sent to inform homeowners and Retailers of our findings. Some homes built at our Topeka, IN building facility between 2016 and 2020 with a specific brand of underlayment have experienced consequential deterioration of the roof decking at the lower areas of the eaves.

  • This defect that may exist would be located along the lower eaves of the home, potentially on both sides of the home. During wet conditions, the underlayment beneath the shingles may allow water to wick up under the shingles. As a result, moisture may collect on the lower part of the roof and can possibly eventually deteriorate the decking material in these areas. This potential deterioration can be detected by inspection of the lower eave areas by slightly lifting the bottom most shingles and inspecting for deterioration and/or moisture of the roof decking material. There may be observable signs such as the roof eaves at the lower edge having a concave appearance. Precautions to be taken if this defect is identified on your home is to contact Champion as soon as noticed.

  • Champion will voluntarily inspect your home free of charge to determine if there has been unexpected deterioration relating to a material used as underlayment in the lower eaves of the roof. Champion, in its sole discretion, will repair or compensate if a home is found to contain unexpected deterioration related to the underlayment. For any home inspected but, no visible deterioration found, Champion will take a preventative action and seal an area along the eaves. If any homeowner/Retailer has already experienced and paid for a previous repair due to unexpected deterioration of the underlayment in the lower area of the eaves, then reimbursement for the cost of the HUD-approved repair method will be made with submission to Champion of proper documentation evidencing repair of the affected areas.

  • For repair, any deteriorated material along the eaves will be removed up to four feet and replaced with approved materials using approved methods. For preventative measures, approved materials will be installed at the very lower edge of the eave to prevent moisture intrusion. Please understand that if shingles are replaced, the replacement shingles may not match due to color batch differences and/or sun fading of existing shingles.

  • If you want Champion to arrange an inspection, please contact the Champion Service Department at the File a Claim page. Champion will honor a request for an inspection and/or repair for a period of one year from the date of the notice.

  • You, as the owner, may submit a complaint to the Secretary of H.U.D. if you believe: The notification or remedy described therein is inadequate or; The manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy the problem in accordance with this notification or; The manufacturer has failed or is unable to remedy the problem within a reasonable time after the owner’s first attempt to obtain remedy. Any actions taken by the manufacturer under the Act in no way limit the rights of the owner or any other persons under any contract or other applicable law and the owner may have further rights under contract or other applicable law.
